Hi from Alaska again.
Thanks for all the help. I'm encouraged that everyone offered so much
help to someone new.

As the clay has dried out some more it looks like clay to me. I can roll
a snake and wrap it around my finger with only little cracks. When I cut
the lump with the wire and look very close I can see tiny pieces of sand
although I can't feel them. That is probably lack of experience. Also
when I wedge the clay, it begins to stick to the wood surface so I put
cloth down and it doesn't stick to it.

So I will try more straining and dry it out again. And when ready to
test fire I will protect it from possible melting. I'm also getting the
book A Potters Geology. The preview looks like just what I need.
What's "popouts"? Does this happen with hand building as well as throwing?
They didn't get my wheel and kiln on the barge 'till the day it was
supposed to be here. Now it's due here the 16th. I'm trying to wait
patiently.
