presents

ARTHUR GONZALEZ
"Sculpting the Head andTorso & Clay Monoprinting"
"Techniques in Tracking Progress: the work of Arthur Gonzalez."
demonstration, slide show and lecture
August 17-18, 2002
9am - 5 pm
Cost: $130

Arthur Gonzalez will demonstrate his techniques for building a figure and his
unique way of building from the inside-out. In having access to the interior
of the sculptural form the artist can work from both inside and outside of the
clay wall, thus creating a more believable execution. He will also demonstrate
his recent discoveries in printmaking on clay slabs. Monotypes of clay will be
pulled from plaster surfaces. These prints are "inked" from underglazes and
have all of the mystique of monoprints...the possibilities are endless.

The human figure is always paramount in Arthur's sculptures. He usually
focuses on a fragment of the figure -- a torso, bust, or head rather than the
whole figure. Using clay and found objects Arthur creates thoughtful and
provocative pieces.

Arthur Gonzalez is the ceramic chair at the California College of Arts and
Crafts in Oakland, California. He has exhibited at Susan Cummings Gallery in
Mill VAlley, CA, Phyllis Kind Gallery, NY and John Natsoulas Gallery, Davis ,
CA.
