I just finished reading the Art of Firing by Nils Lou, and I am sold on the
Minnesota Flat Tops. He has detailed designs for one that is 11 cubic feet.
He discusses ITC, and flue size.
I would be interested to know if anything things they have a better design
that that one. He shows one being used as a salt kiln and I would love to
do that.

I'm about to build the kiln you're describing. Am also gathering info at
this point. Where are you located? We're in Yuma, AZ. I've ordered the
Olsen and Lou books and am seeking The Energy-Efficient Potter by Brodie.
The last one's hard to find.

I want to build a flat-top kiln that might be about 2.5'x3x3 (not
including flue). Does anyone have any good design plans? I want it to
be a gas fired kiln with two burners. I am thinking about using
firebrick on the inside and then lining the outside with red brick. I
am hoping not to have this loose stacked. I might even be able to use
ceramic fiber on the inside walls. I want to fire to high temperatures.
I am not too worried about the red brick melting because of the
firebrick and or the ceramic fire. I am thinking that ITC might help on
this issue. This would be the first kiln I am making so any help/advice
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Evan, I think you will enjoy Nils Lou's book, The Art of Firing. Chapter
10 has designs for specialty kilns and there is an 11 cubic foot "Oregon
Flat Top" that appears to be just what you are looking for. Mel is quoted as
calling it "The best little kiln in the world." Lori Pierce in New

Nils Lou has a very good book out about the Minnesota Flat Top Kiln.
