That is the percolator principle and has definitely been around for a long
time. Whether it was keeping the coffee grounds at the top with a peculator,
or down at the bottom with these new-fangled cafeteries (sp?), or in the
filter outside the vessel (as on coffee machines), the whole idea was to
exclude the grounds from the beverage. Filtering of any kind is preferable
to a mouth full of milled coffee. :-)
