The eagerly awaited issue of Pottery Making Illustrated with Jonathon
Kaplan's well researched article has arrived. A detailed and complete
coverage...a huge job, well done, objective and succinct.
I have three electric wheels in my studio, a 30 year old Skutt, still going
strong, a Shimpo basic RK 10, metallic traction drive, and a two year old
full pan Bailey . My new students all prefer the Bailey, and it certainly
keeps the studio cleaner! The response of the Shimpo pedal makes it a
favorite of mine, however the fixed position of the pedal in that model is
uncomfortable for my arthritic knee, and the wheel head doesn't lift off
with the ease of my Skutt. Don't buy a wheel from a picture...test-drive it
first. What is right for this five foot person may be wrong for you. ( I
cannot get close enough to the wheel head without removing the splash pan!)
I wish now there could be postings to Clayart by the persons who tested the
wheels, giving a more personal perspective, as Studio Potter once did. I
will soon be buying another wheel...decisions, decisions. Do those who
'know' still think the Soldner is 'the best' pedal? I'm in love with the
Willie E from the picture alone...but no place to test drive it here! Will
this wheel be only MINE, or another student wheel...?? Dream on Lori...in
