hehheh....this reminds me of a funerary urn I made to order a few years ago.
Guy wanted his urn shaped like a penis, and that's what he got. The older
man throwing 3 wheels down from me was offended.........

I am fairly sure there was a photograph of such a plate in an article in
Ceramic Review within the last 2 or 3 years together with other similarly
decorated pottery.
Happy research!

Did any of the UK Clayarters hear yesterday's (Tuesday, 23rd July) "Front
Row" programme on BBC Radio 4? I only caught the tail end (excuse the pun)
of Mark Lawson talking to someone trying to raise £250,000 to save this
unique plate from leaving the country. It apparently looks like a portrait,
but on close inspection, it is contructed of male organs.

Did anyone hear the details? Was it only in the manner of, or was it
actually painted by the great master? Am I right in thinking it must be
Maiolica or tin-glazed ware? Any date given? Or if it is viewable?

Elca,

It depends on the size of the penis, etc.

I would say that it's probably still around somewhere, but nature taking
it's course, they're not pointing at the ceiling and most likely look like
dinner candles that were left in a hot room too long..

Oh, God, Janet! "penis plate"---"thanks for the TIP"?? Too funny---was it
intentional? I missed the beginning of this thread, but will confess to
making a penis-shaped robe-hook for the back of my (ex)father-in-law's
bathroom door a number of years ago. He never mounted it---er, screwed
it---I mean, attached it to the door. He wasn't offended, but I misjudged
his sense of adventure . On the same thread, my women's-lib daughter
made penis-shaped shortbread cookies one year---made for rather tentative
munching.

I was commissioned to make an urn for a guy in the shape of a penis. Tall
cylinder with a flare at top, lid is a round bowl, inverted. ;) Just
informed today that the Penis Urn has survived an earthquake of 4.2 or
so.....(He lives in San Fran now......) When the shelf Urn was sitting on
started shaking, friend's partner grabbed the urn and headed for the safe
place with it!

This thread is indeed comforting. I'm not the only potter, then,
who's been asked/commissioned to create phallic erotica! In this
case the commission came from a lesbian friend who markets
erotica. She wanted ceramic dildoes in very interesting and
unnatural colours!

Might the historically (hysterically?) minded on the list have
insight into the antiquity of the making of ceramic dildoi?

If you accept this commission, do make sure that you do NOT overfire ;
slumping would be a real downer...

I really don't know, but...if all this phallic ware ever came in close proximity
to Judy Chicago's "Dinner Party" we'd all be out of business from the
proliferation of clay offspring!!!
