If you go to Pasadena and the Gamble House
check out Architectural Detail...a business
on Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena.
The owner collects architectural fragments
from houses or buildings that are being torn
down so they can be recycled in the repair
or building of other structures.
It's an amazing store.
My favorite thing is a brushed metal sign....
evidently from the Museum of Tolerance...
I think the sign makers had trouble spelling
and what they ended up with is "Museum of"
with a rough.burned/cut edge....
If you wanted to drag home a column or
a fireplace mantle, doorway...there might
be some difficulty getting through the
security screening on the airport check in
or some discussion with the use of the adjoining
seat...but you would have a treasure.
This reminds me of a story about the collector
Fred Weismann, who purchased a sculpture by
Duane Hansen...his work was hyper realistic
figures....So Weismann purchased a sitting figure
at a New Your gallery, and got the figure a seat
on the flight home to LA....
Don't ask me about the bird walk I just took above...
Freehand Gallery..3rd Street off La Cienaga
is the place to see good functional work.
Bergamot Station and Frank Lloyd is the place
to see good Art...
Have fun visiting
