BRENT C Has anyone replaced the bearing without replacing the wheelhead? I
let too much water accumulate in the spashpan and bearing is now shot(Two
years of poor habit). Supposedly the bearing and wheelhead are a replace as
unit. Somebody must have looked into industrial bearings etc..school use
abuse..any luck with alternative sources/bearing replacement out there?

Thanks,

Chris

If I remember right the bearings are pressed into the flange that the splash
pan hooks onto, which is aluminum... the races for the bearing are steel and
so corrode right onto the aluminum making it a bear to get the old bearing
out. The wheel head uses a spring pin to hold it onto the shaft, then the
shaft can be driven out of the bearing (I am going from memory here,
replaced the bearing on a cxc years ago) and then the bearing chiseled out.
It will probably take a trip to a machine shop to do this right, unless you
are supremely lucky. I don't think that the wheel head/bearing/shaft
assemblies are really that expensive from amoco, and would save you a lot of
trouble, pluss you could play around with fixing the old one in your spare
time, for an extra one down the road.

just did some checking and the brent site has a pdf document listing all the
parts and prices
http://www.brentwheels.com/pdfs/wheel.pdf

12" head and bearing for $108
14" head and bearing for $117
not bad for all new metal!

I "think" the Brent Bearing is "pressed" on... Which makes it hard to work on
without a machine shop.

You might try Granger or McMaster Carr. My Brent had a standard one inch
flange bearing. But if you order, you must specify cast iron housing. I
made the mistake of ordering a steel housing due to cost. Wasted money, as
the steel housing was too flimsy. You also need to specify the mounting hole
spacing on the flange...very important.
