HI all,

I recently bought an older reduction kiln, Thermolite
kiln (Older kiln only used twice) and had the burner
set redone by my gas company. After my first firing,
at ^06 a brief reduction period and ending at ^10 with
around 45 min reduction and then sealed the kiln
off,--this is what the owner manual said to do??
however all my pieces came out the same, a lite blue
color despite using several different glazes. My
question is there a place online, a book or someone
can you tell me a schedual to follow for frduction to
get the results I am looking for--this is my first
time with reduction and need some direction as I am
quite unsure of what I am doing...Any advice you can
give would be helpful.

Hi. A little more information will help the gerus to answer your firing
questions, such as what size kiln, burners, what clay body and which
glazes... If
the glazes were all celadons or clears with no cobalt you were perhaps
getting a
reduction blue celadon...help us help you. Lori

Hi Michael, you asked for books to help you understand your first reduction
firings. I like Clay and Glazes for the Potter by Rhodes/Hopper; the Art of
Firing by Nils Lou; Gas Kiln Firing by Ritchie, and Getting Into Pots by
Wettlaufer. Also, the Potters Dictionary by Hamer. Try interlibrary loan
if you do not have access to a good ceramic college library. Some books will
be more pertinent than others. Also a local Potters Guild may be helpful for
you . There is much to learn and it never ends. ( I'm smiling when I write
that.) Don't overlook the Clayart archives for firing advice as well.

Not enough information. How big is the kiln, updraft, downdraft, etc.
What colors were the glazes supposed to be and what are/is the
colorant/s used?
How do you know that you were in reduction or not in reduction? What
color is your clay?

When I got my new Geil kiln, I did several things. Since I was using
mainly low iron stoneware (B-Mix) and porcelain, I bought a bag or two
of a darker stoneware clay with iron in it. I put small things made
with this Iron bearing clay throughout the kiln and cones throughout the
kiln and some pots with copper red glaze throughout out the kiln.

I didn't get any copper red for my first two or three firings, the iron
clay told me if I was getting any reduction at all since it was
difficult to tell from the porcelain or B-mix.
