Ian - First thing comes to mind would be to check the voltage you're
supplying to the kiln. You may only have 208V and thus will never
reach desired temperature.

I would say that you are not getting the amount of power you need, or
one reason or another (could be as simple as your switch doesn't
function right).

Subject: My New Kiln is Working?
Hi
I am new to this forum. I have been practicing pottery for the last 5
months
I resently invested in a small cone-art kiln but I have been having
trouble with it reaching it's peak tempeture. it is supposed to be
capable
of firing to 2350 F, which according to my Table of Incandescence, would
appear yellow-white. My problem is that yesterday when I fired the
kiln,on
HI, and the interior reached orange at best. It stayed that way for 23
hours, and failed to melt the #6 orton cone I had in the sitter. The
kiln
is 1 phase (i'm not sure what that means) and is wired for a 240v dryer
outlet, that is to say the power cord ends in a 240v plug. I am
wondering
if anyone has encountered this problem in the past and knows what i
might
be doing wrong.
thank you
Ian

I suggest that you obtain a wiring diagram for the kiln. A simple
ohmmeter test may locate the problem. It sounds like some of the
elements are not turning on.
