bull clay source in s.e. wisconsin (?)

Hello,

I am new to Wisconsin and live in Oconomowoc. I was getting clay from =
A.R.T. but for some reason I cannot reach them. Phone lines are =
dead....? =20

I managed to find another source but found the clay to not work for me. =
(I mainly do lowfire handbuilding i.e. coiling, pinch pots, slab....his =
recipe (he submits to AMACO to mix), even though quite wet, was =
constantly cracking and easy to break apart...problem of elasticity?). =
Whatever the case...it was not good for the handbuilding I do as I was =
constanty smoothing cracks out. The clay I got from A.R.T. never did =
that. I have not tried the AMOCO clays that are listed in their =
catalogue. I could order these through him to try. Does anyone =
recommend their clays? However, I am wondering if there are any other =
sources in the surrounding Milwaukee area where I can just drive and =
purchase. I mainly do lowfire handbuilding i.e. coiling, pinch pots, =
slab....but want to explore other clays i.e. porcelain, high fire clays.

Thanks in advance for some direction. It seems mostly what I find are =
little ceramic shops that sell molds but not bulk clay.

Hi Beth,
Call Mike Jacobs at Paoli Clay Co. 608-845-7000. It's located a little south
of Madison- 6879 Paoli Rd, Paoli, WI. They've been wonderfully supportive
of Wisconsin potters for years.
Another one is Great Lakes Clay, Carpentersville, IL. www.greatclay.com

Hi Beth,

I often get my clay from Paoli Clay Company (in Belleville, WI, near
Madison). I also like to stop in at Nasco (in Fort Atkinson) for other clay
supplies.

Good luck and welcome to the neighborhood,
Diane

Beth: I might add a few words about Paoli Clay although
Sylvia gave you good information.
They do have low fire clay or clays. They get some of it
from Continental Clay in Minneapolis, MN. Mike was not in
when I phoned this morning and a young relative, minding
the store, couldn't answer the cone range. However, he
did suggest that you ask Mike to ship you 50 lbs. U.P.S.
to try out. It is possible they sometimes deliver out your way.
Then, if you like it, you can proceed from there, driving over
to Paoli to pack up your vehicle or having more shipped.
Paoli would not charge you more than the catalog price
of Continental as I am sure he buys it wholesale.
They also may still stock a talc/ball clay mix, but they
haven't got machinery to de-air what they make, if they
still prepare clay. I had taught children using it but
disliked it for myself.

Thanks! It looks like two decent options- Paoli and GreatClay. Glad you
did not give me a hard time for the typo "bull" clay in the subject. :o)
