calcining/shinos/studio potter

Can't believe that responses to my calcine question are already coming =
in!
Thank you so much, especially since it seems that calcining can be =
important when using shinos. =20

With so many Shino Shows and literature available on this sometimes =
cantankerous glaze, I've been contemplating taking=20
what I've learned from My Shino Experiences and moving on .... since so =
many wonderful, experienced potter/artists are doing and sharing such =
massive problem solving and experimentation, more I'll bet than at
any other time in recent history .... makes anything I might be able to =
do seem primitive and unnecessary. The problem is that, no matter how I =
justify to me that
this might be a good move since there is also a wealth of learning out =
there in so many other areas which intrigue me ..... leaving shino =
behind doesn't seem like a move up, nor even a lateral move, but a big =
dive downward.

This morning I've taken time to examine the unfired product of my last =
three months work .... not a whole lot of pots to represent so much time =
expended ... still they cover several studio shelves and tables ....... =
all lidded jars, mostly smallish, and square vases/bottles of some =
variety.
When I review most of them in an attempt to determine just how I want =
the completed pot to look, it always comes up shino ... a dozen looks of =
shino ...

When I came in from such contemplation, and musing as to why not copper =
reds, tenmokus, black/whites, lichens, fumed salts, Woo blues, brighter =
colors, since I'm already a little familiar with these glazes and have =
enjoyed working with them .... I picked up the June Studio Potter =
and.... what!... how did I miss it the first time through .... there's =
Harvey Sadow, Liz Willoughby, Malcolm Davis, Tony and Sheila Clennell et =
al featured in a whole section on "Carbon-Trapping Along The Old Shino =
Trail". A real treat! Great material! And I knew ..... yet again ..... =
that this is where I am. =20

I'll continue to be entertained briefly on other paths I know ... and =
why not ..... Paul of Ireland convinced me in his post to Valerie this =
morning that darting about=20
here and there is not a bad thing .... it's who I am.... as far as clay =
is concerned, at
least. BUT looks like I'm destined to be hangin' around that shino =
trail a mite longer........... and I know just the horse to ride.... one =
of Karen Terpstra's creations that will be shown in LaCrosse (Wisconsin) =
in September ..... the nag I saw is perfect for my travels...... or =
travails..... delightful work!

Quite a morning............

without looking into it... and of course i forgot all about it...
after reading your post i frantically went thru my desk-pile and
i found it! beautiful issue.
