Just found out about a Val Cushing workshop scheduled for October
19-20 at the Cub Creek Foundation in Appomattox, Va (southern part of
state). They have a web site that's under construction:
http://www.cubcreek.org The site has images of their large wood
fired kiln. You can get more details by calling 434-248-5074 or
email: jessiman@ceva.net

For those of you that live within the Seattle area....how many of you
would be interested in attending a workshop with Val Cushing at the
helm? He is willing to come to Seattle for a workshop. The workshop
will probably be held in the late summer due to other commitments by
Val.

I know most potters know about Shaner red. Here is a little insight
to that glaze by Val...

( About glazes) Often they change the name of a glaze and call it their
own !! I give all my glazes away anyway , but it is nice if folks know
who made it. You know that Shaner red came out of a glaze series that
Clarence Merritt and Charles Harder cooked up. Dave did the color tests
on it and added the combo that makes Shaner Red. My VC, AA/ blue/ green,
rivulet, turns up in various books and magazines under different names.
That's how it goes . When someone uses it the right way , at least, I
like that!! =3D20

Dave also worked with Henry Mead on what became to be known as Shaner
Red. I have altered that glaze over the years and get a brilliant mat
red without the glaze going green where it is thick. If you want a
yellow glossy, and mat red where thin , replace the clay in Shaner red
with zircopax...it works.
