cone 5 plus raku

Is it not true that if you fire your clay as high as cone 5, that it will
not reduce in the combustibles?

I had some cone 6 medieval ware that I thought I would blacken a little.
The clay did not reduce at all.

The more vitrified the clay, the less receptive
it will be to absorption of smoke in a raku-type
post-firing reduction. If the clay is still
undervitrified at ^5, it might pick up some
smoke. If it's an actual ^5 clay body, it
probably won't.

Hi, Alisa - I think if your piece is already fired to maturity (or close),
the clay is not porous enough to suck in/trap the carbon on the surface, so
therefore it won't be black, just an ugly grey colour. I, too, tried that,
in an effort to strengthen the clay body. Mostly I found that the pieces
cracked, as the clay wasn't porous enough to withstand the thermal shock of
rakuing.

I've done Raku at cone 5 with great results. Sure the clay body is less
likely to pick up carbon but that's a good thing. As long as the Glaze is
reduced, everybody is happy. Les H.
