insulating the outside of an electric kiln-why?

Didn't anyone else ever try removing the stainless steel wrap, then wrapping
the extra insulation directly around the firebrick, or existing insulating
blanket, and putting the stainless steel jacket back on?
That way, the stainless steel continues to do the job it was designed for -
protecting the insulation and rigidly holding things together.

Last year, Jonathan did this, and posted some great
pictures of his process and results. (He added an
extension to the jacket, to accomodate the added
circumference.)

Yes! Jonathan Pennington (?) from SC did it last year and it was
apparently quite successful. Search the archives under his name and you
should find a description of what he did. I think he also had pictures of
the process on a website.
