diagnosis is the major element when
working with tools that falter.

isolation of the problem is very helpful.

you take off the wheel head.
run the motor. check the noise, where
is it.?

you check the wear on the brushes.

you take off the motor and run
it. alone.
you test the bearings and grease them.

the great mechanics always laugh at folks
that just replace everything. it is called roulette
mechanics. replace a part, see if it works, replace
another part, see if it works..soon, you have a new wheel.
and it runs, but, you do not know what the problem
was.

isolate, that is the key.
and, take it apart. scope it out.
listen and learn what makes it tick. it is
a very simple machine. motor, shaft, bearings
and a wheel head. all lined up.

i have had about 30 brents in my care over
my lifetime...had one motor failure, and that
was on one of `my` wheels, not school. (fifteen years
of constant throwing.) i have
replaced one set of bearings in 40 years. one set
of motor brushes. and one circuit board.
belts are the most common problem. i keep
a couple in my tool box, just because i know i
will need them.

if i have not run my farm wheels for a while, i just
flood the bearings with wd-40 (by the way, wd-40 is not
a very good lubricant, it is a water absorber), and
let them run for a couple of hours at medium speed.
flood them again. not much will get down to the bearings,
but some does. get out the water, warm them up.

day in and day out i use my skutt dc-1.
it is an old fart, but works with power. never
fails me.
i have been using the axner, and so far, it works ok.
still a great buy. talked to howard about the wheels.
he is still trying to make them all work. it is a daunting
task. he has his hands full. i am sure he will make them
work to a standard. he has changed the packing, so no
cords are hanging out there. (mine arrived cut in half.)
