you are correct, in my opinion earl.
the new work of mata ortiz is very `this generation`.
the other fact:
mata ortiz.
in the family unit, there is no clear division of labor.
if you decorate well, and are a woman, you decorate,
if you are a man, and you decorate well, you decorate.
when visiting potters in mata ortiz, i saw a real variety
of people decorating, making, forming, firing. many children
had their own small business going.
i think that the world makes `famous` labels
to groups of potters. and often, snobbery begins with it.
alfred potters.
mackenzie potters
taos potters
california potters.
hamada potters
leech potters.
`because i am part of the root system of a famous
potter, i must be better than most others.`
bull shit.
i have spent my life trying to be a mel potter. i sure as hell
have never made uchida pots. i like the philosophy of david
shaner. `look into yourself, find the answer there`.
(translation of original text.)
spend your life honing skill and knowledge, the pots will follow.
if you need to find your next firing of pots in CM, or if you have
to wait for the next issue of ART NEWS so you will know what
to paint...you are in deep do do. inspiration is a wonderful thing.
just don't make it the reason you work. that should come from you.

the only important thing is, THE CRAFT, not one or two dozen
people, in the line of millions of men and women who have
worked and lived the craft.
