>>I would have to say that if a
potter is making strictly functional ceramics, to be used, plates, =
vases,
mugs, etc...then they are craftpersons.<<

Dear Chris,

I know your hands are full at the moment..
but I must respond to this statement.

When using the word "Art"=20
I think the essence is in the looking.

I have an affinity for vases, I make them
not to be used but to be looked at...
though my wife does exercise their functionality..
My sole purpose in making is for looking.
Both in the creation and the completed piece.

I consider them art in the most stringent sense.

I make mugs too..for drinking from.
But my execution is based in looking..
of course they exist within functional parameters
and as such are defined by their efficient design.
The most successful transcend their function and=20
enter into the realm of...looking=20

The ritual of tea drinking (informal) for me
is an opportunity to closely observe my works.
There seems to be no end to this pleasure..
not at least till another comes along.
But I can always go back to my favorites.

An art that is pristine and untouchable.. a display piece.
Enters into the realm of drama and the extraordinary.
This creates an aura that can enhance the spiritual impact.
It can shock you into a heart stopping experience of the here now.

But the art of simplicity and the everyday is as important as that..
It also brings you into contact with the present..the here/now.
This very moment..you don't have to go to a gallery for that.
Beauty is beyond the eye and the hand that holds it.
A transformation vehicle.

Art or craft?.. very nebulous.
It is a state of mind.
or lack thereof..
