how to fix broken kiln posts?

updated mon 9 sep 02

Carol Tripp on sun 8 sep 02

I broke two triangular kiln posts this morning - butterfingers. The breaks
are straight(ish) across. Is there any way I can fix them or is it not
worth the trouble?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Best regards,
Carol

Carol - saw them down to the next smallest size; a hacksaw works really
well.

Dip the broken ends in water, and then in glaze, quickly putting the two
ends back together while still wet. Wipe excess glaze off of the
outside and fire to the maturing temperature of the glaze. Should work
best if you use the highest temperature that you fire to.

I have some of these that have been "repaired" in this manner that have
given service for 20 years.

Hi Carol- if they are still stable when the two pieces are put together, you
can just put some glaze on each surface, and use them in your next firing.
I have a few "repaired" posts here too.

Carol -
Kiln posts are cheap, especially when you amortize the investment over time.
Don't risk your kiln set on repaired posts. Just get new ones, and get
plenty of extras.
