an artist?

Vince, I could not agree with you more. This is so outdated. The term
artist, [small a ] is not a compliment, as some think, just a statement of
how you earn your living. Artist [capitol A] is a value judgement. We are
all potential artists, from childhood. I think some people are just too
hung up to say, "I am a clay artist," when asked what they do. Just don't
think about it, and do it. Rikki

Bruce -
I understand exactly what you are saying, but I think the entire problem is
the concept of "an outdated and loaded stereotype." The reality is that
every single child is an artist until parents, peers, teachers, etc.,
convince them otherwise. The only way we are going to get past the idea of
"artist" being someone with vast "talent" (whatever the hell that is) and an
ego and self-absorbed vocabulary to go along with it, is to use the term as
it should be used. An artist is anyone who makes art. That implies nothing
qualitative at all. Everyone who makes pots or paintings with a sense of
artistry is an artist. We could easily get bogged down in definitions here.

The solution to this problem is to use the term "artist" freely and easily,
to bestow it generously, and to claim it proudly without ever attaching any
kind of swollen primadonna egotism.
Best wishes -
- Vince

Never called myself an artist...ever.
ok...I tried it on for size once or twice..
but it didn't fit.

I think it is an embarrassing term.
An outdated and loaded stereotype.

On introduction was asked.... are you a potter?
My friend insisted I was..
I could only smile and say...sometimes.

Labels suck.

Am I... a father, a husband, a potter
a sculptor.. a doodler .. or what?

if anything I want to be..
a more authentic seeker in me..

caught up in the past..
tripping into the future.
Trying to find the present...

Causes and effects..
Destiny foretold.

Truely original...hhmn
discover the present.
no player in time.

A seed..is it original?
genetic code unfold..
destiny.. how cold!

but not for the moment
the wind and the rain...
sunlight reflected ..a leaf

trembling drip..
about to drop.

this moment..
original.

no past no future...
destiny not.

this very moment
never a thought.

Bruce
