Dear Philip,
The degree of danger from Hydrochloric Acid depends on the dilution. =
Gastric juices contain about three and a half grams of HCl per litre. My =
Tum has survived that for three score years and ten. As kids we were =
dosed, when sick, with a 2% solution of Nitric acid, a nostrum called =
"Fever Cure"
Diluting Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid to about a ten percent solution, =
always acid into the water with constant stirring, should give a =
solution which will do the trick of converting Calcium carbonate into a =
soluble chloride but it would have no effect on Gypsum. Bubbles indicate =
things are happening.A thorough washing with fresh water will disposed =
of the soluble salt.
I would advise wearing appropriate protective clothing when dealing with =
Concentrated Mineral Acids.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
