building a cone-drive wheel: need advice

I'm planning on building a cone-drive wheel and need some advice from those
familiar with Shimpo or other cone-drive machines. A while back I saw the
transmission of an RK-1 and I plan on something similar, except I think I'll be
better off shifting the motor by rotating it about a long arm (record player
style), rather than sliding it along a shaft; the latter is prone to jamming if
not precise enough. I currently have a reversing washing machine motor (1/2 HP)
w/ 1/2" shaft and a wheel hub/bearing assembly from a wrecked Explorer for the
bearing.

I would like to buy the following, since making them is not worth it:

Rubber-drive-ring: My known options are those from a RK-1 or RK-8, both about
$38, or a "Brent #15" (no clue what it looks like) for $21. (Most RK-2s,
apparently after 1975, use a sphere drive and I'm assuming it isn't a suitable
ring). I like the RK-1 design, where the rubber faces parallel to the shaft
(rather than perpendicular like a lawnmower wheel) - that way the motor shifts
horizontally and you don't have to worry about lifting the motor weight when
changing speeds. No doubt Shimpo figured that out too! What are the
differences between the RK-1 and RK-8 drive rings (shaft or outer diameter,
esp.)? Does anyone know what the Brent #15 drive ring looks like, if it is
English (1/2, 5/8...), and if it is any good? I'm planning on machining my
own cone unless there is a similar 1/2" bore cone from a good manufacturer.

Wheel head: 12" is plenty for me. My known options are Shimpo 12" ($60) and
Brent 12" ($68). I could machine my own but I'd pay $40 just for the aluminum!
I think the Shimpo 12" uses non-standard drive pins and no doubt a metric
shaft. The Brent appears to use a 1" shaft and I'm assuming standard drive
pins. Correct?

Any other thoughts appreciated!
