pyrometer trouble

Hi Melinda,

I have a new Ultimax 2T that I am going to have to return to my supplier.
It is fine until about cone .06 or so, then goes nuts and gives readings
like 1200C, and later, 1900C, Yes, I said "C". I have given this piece of
equipment several chances, but I must have a defective one. At first I
thought I was not getting those teensy wires inserted in the thermocouples
correctly, but realized that since it gives reasonable readings both on the
way up and down until it gets to the higher cones, the connections are ok.
Good thing I still had the old analog pyrometer in there as well, for
comparison purposes.

To comment on one of your statements about getting different readings when
you wiggle the plug....that may mean it is not secure at the connection to
the thermocouple.

Good luck...I had high hopes for this as it is reasonably priced.

I just bought an Ultimax 1T so I could see what each adjustment I
made, did to the temperature of my gas kiln. With this being the first
firing, I was really looking forward to having this extra tool and
delighting in the thought of not having to wait long periods (waiting
possibly forever) for cones to drop. Well, it's not working. The highest
it is reading is F 597 and C 347. It will not display over this even if
I take the thermocouple out , let it cool and then put it back in. It
climbs to the above temps and stays. I now it's hotter by the nice
orange glow inside!
When I wiggle the plug (actually, where the wire has just entered
the plug) that goes into the pyrometer the display toggles between 0L,
the above temps. or a quick flash or a higher temperature (I think I
glimpsed 1600 something once). My question is, is this probably just a
bad lead wire or plug, or was I suppose to do something else to this
thing, such as calibrate, before I used it?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
