raku fire, re-fire, post-fire ?

updated thu 19 sep 02

Is anyone on the List familiar with a raku firing process whereby the =
piece is first fired to glaze maturing temp (1830 F), allowed to cool, =
then re-fired to a lower temp before post-firing reduction? I believe =
this is the process James Watkins uses for his raku firing.

My question is what temperature does one re-fire before post-firing?

TIA.

I haven't done this but I know a potter that does. He re-fires to 1100 F
for copper mats. Patricia Harden

I think maybe I'm missing something here. Why "re-fire" to 1100 F, instead
of cooling down to 1100 F in the kiln during initial fireing? Unless of
course one has applied lusters, or some other low fire substance after the
first fireing. Is that what I'm missing? On the other hand I sometimes re-
fire copper matt if I don't like the results the first time. (This is also
why I hardly use copper matt any longer. Another reason is that copper matt
seems to less than permanent color wise, though I think there are ways
around that)
