pizza on kiln shelves?

I use 2 new 12 X 24 X 1 inch Acme Marls kiln shelves in my
wood fired pizza oven. The fire is built directly on the shelves,
burned for several hours, and then the coals are spread over
the entire area until they die down. Ashes and any left-over
coals are pushed to the side, and the shelves are cleaned with
a wet mop before cooking.
The kiln shelves are perfect for this.
I just wouldn't feel comfortable, however, cooking on used
kiln shelves, like maybe some nasty vapors are deposited
in the pores.

In my regular electric oven, I use a homemade baking stone.
Just make a thick slab the size you want, bisque fire slowly,
and fire. Much cheaper than buying a kiln shelf. Way cheaper
than Pampered Chef, but you don't get to go to a party.

I've been using an old kiln shelf that I purchased really cheap (it was
broken) for a pizza stone. The great thing about it is that I leave it in
the oven when it is time to clean.Turn on the self cleaning part - viola,
clean oven and pizza stone. I don't know what cone the regular pizza stones
are fired to. However, I have a cone 10 kiln shelf and somehow it looks
stronger to me. I've used it now for probably 10 years and I'm still
kicking so I would say you are safe:) Seriously though, there is nothing
that would affect you adversely. So enjoy.

We've cooked in the kiln in class, a "Semester is over thank God" party, but
never straight on the shelf, guess we didn't want to mess up the shelf. We
cooked a huge pork roast, wrapped in foil. It was delicious.

There is the story of a potter in a village in Italy.
The bakers in the village went on strike.
So he turned his kiln into the village bakery.

I assume he cleaned his shelves first!

Hello from Alaska
Hopefully you didn't ingest too many toxic chemicals. On the History
channel we watched a story about the Dead Sea Scrolls. They analyzed the
chemical residue on the ancient kiln walls as well as the pottery they
found in an area to determine the origin of the pots.

Marilynn, a beginner not so sure about this food in kilns thing.
