Hi- this sounds like the way porcelain acts when it is not TOTALLY BONE DRY.
Also, you asked it some porc. is gray in color....Yes.

Good luck with your efforts. Hard work now, but wait until you start
throwing ..that's when the fun starts...sorry, you may be an accomplished
porcelain thrower- I know I'm not...after earthenware and stoneware, it's
tricky.
