Dear Martin,
This... << On page 218 of Susan Peterson's "The Craft and Art of Clay" =
she writes:- low-fire glazed pieces; raw ware robs the glaze of oxygen.>>...seems an =
incongruous statement.
There is an inference that seems to run like this:
Greenware will contain some residual organic matter which, when burnt, =
will give an reducing atmosphere. The reducing gases which are produced =
will attack or reduce raw glaze components and prevent them from melting =
and vitrifying.
Reinterpreting this notion, you would be unable to raw glaze earthen =
ware pottery. I do not think that is a true proposition.
I suggest you search through her literature references, given on Pp =
386-7 and 392. If these give no clue as to the origin of this idea you =
may have to contact Prof. Peterson and put the question directly to her.
Best regards,

I think it quite enough to just put my bisque ware at the top of the kiln
and otherwise carry on as before!
Question everything and everyone:-)
Then rely on your own common sense and experience!

Dear Martin,
I respect your attitude but do not agree with the concept which informs =
it.
I have just read a delightful book titles "I wish I had not said that!". =
The basis of the essay is that "Experts" say things which at the time =
seem to be based on "Common Sense". But they are proven to be incorrect =
by future events, either as natural occurrences or developed through =
research and experimentation.
Though you say..."Question everything and everyone:-) Then rely on your =
own common sense and experience!"... I would prefer to rely on "Reason", =
after using all available resources.
I am sure the Peterson references would lead to enlightenment, even if =
the result was negative.
Best regards,
Ivor.=20
