from mr. uchida/my teacher in japan:

make a clean, no pin hole white glaze.
make pots for a year. at least a thousand.
glaze them all white, no decoration.

fire them.

you will find out real fast what your forms are all about.
you will get some clues about your work.
you will make some changes.

form, that is the key to all pots.
if your forms are well thought out, well, the glaze
just protects them.

if you have to add all sorts of decoration, make sure
you are not doing it to cover bad form.

when you have control of your forms, then work
in some simple decoration, that flows with the form.

cover up decoration often happens to people too.

Dear Mel,
Sound advice.
But my dear Chap, why one percent. More than half of this will be =
wasted.
My preference is to ball mill, wet, one tenth of one percent of that =
Cobalt Oxide into the none flux entities in one of those glazes for a =
couple of hours after weighing. Depending on the flux issue the results =
will be reminiscent of the sky of a spring morning.
I think my love affair with Cobalt started when I worked for Deloro =
Stellite. Would love to get hold of some of their foundry sweepings. =
What a colorant that would make!!
Best regards,
Ivor.
