I find that using Pete's red can produce a
blood red over Mel's shino, the one where I usually double
the soda ash after a recommendation
from Mel to "play around" with the soda ash. In this case, Pete's red =
only has the dark
blood red quality on a horizontal surface...
since there must be some pooling to
achieve the satiny red/red..... more of a=20
cranberry on the sides of a large shallow, flared and ruffled bowl.
The doubled soda ash allows lots of
dark lines to show through both the
shino ....which is grayish on porcelain or
white stoneware, though a luscious=20
orange/rust on dark stoneware.... I digress ... black lines also show =
through the red, and around the rim. Soft, naturally appearing lines but =
still distinct.
It's on my coffee table ....... soft gray with
darker gray to black squiggles and rim (better yet, just
below the lighter gray rim) ...... blood red in
the center.... on the wide gray sides a few cranberry dribbles outlined =
in black. Really very striking. Made a visiting pro pronounce, "You'd
better watch it, Joyce. You're getting dangerously close to being good." =
Then he spoiled it (drat)
by looking around and saying, "Well,
you have a way to go ... no worry
about blowing your image yet." "What=20
image? I asked. He just smiled... or
smirked...... no, he smiled. He's a very
generous guy.... he wouldn't smirk
after drinking my wine and eating my
stuffed tortillas.
