I don't believe painting over the rust will help much
even if it could stand the temperature rust is like cancer.
You might try "Navel Jelly" sold at hardware stores.
Generally you apply it and let it stand per directions.
Then remove it and the rust with coarse steel wool or whatever.
Hope this helps.

Well...if one should resort to 'Navel Jelly' for rust
remediations of a Kiln...or
what...
Do wear some nice long rubber gloves to keep any drips from
your arms.
Also...why is it rusty?
IS it rusty oweing to it's present situation, or from it's
past?
Will it merely rust again?
Could you cover the offending areas with some Koalin Wool?
Pinned to the cieling of it?
To keep the flakes from the Pots?

Are we getting pornographic here again?? (heh heh heh)

It is an old kiln I bought from a former teacher. It was rusty then too and
just got to a point where I like my pots enough NOT to want the rust in them
at the end of a glaze firing. It is in my studio which is in my garage. Yes
I live in Canada where it freezes BUT my garage has gas heaters in it and
they are on low all winter. Keeps everything from freezing out there. It
might get cold but it doesn't freeze.
Except for humid summers it sees no moisture - even in the summer it is
cooler and drier in the garage then in the yard.

No room if I want to have the lid fitting tightly. And no where to attach it
to really.
Thanks Phil for your ideas and assistance.
Penni,
