Tammy,
The latest issue of Pottery Making Illustrated has an article on bead
making.

I have been making jewelry for a while and have also been taking pottery
classes. I have started making ceramic beads and would like to know the best
type of clay to use for these and also a way to produce many beads at a time
while remaining consistent in shape and size. I have tried making molds but
the
beads are too small and the mold impression is too small to get a tool in it
to
clean it up and smooth it out. I have searched the internet high and low
looking the for best technique. Unfortunately there is not very much
information out there about making ceramic beads. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you sooooo much!!

Tammy:

Have you tried Egyptian paste (I think it's also called faience). From what
I've seen, it works best in molds. Also, for fine detail in molds, I highly
suggest getting a set of dentist tools. They sell them on E-bay for about
$8, but I just asked my dentist if he had any old ones he wanted to get rid
of. They are fantastic for getting down into crevices in molds, making
stamps, and other finicky stuff.

Dear Tammy Young,=20

A good source of information about this topic is Lapidary Journal (US). =
About a couple of years ago there were instructive articles which you =
would find helpful. They have a web site.

Perhaps a good porcelain clay might be the place to start. This can be =
coloured with Ceramic Stains. Another option is Egyptian Paste. Recipes =
are given in various books and ceramic magazines.

Have fun,

Ivor Lewis

You might try what some polymer clay beaders use. It's called a bead
roller. They come in all different bead sizes and shapes. One place that I
know for sure has them is http://www.polymerclayexpress.com/ . Look in the
jewelry/tools section. I've always gotten excellent service from the folks
at PCE!!

I would imagine that once you got the clay consistency(sp?) right a bead
roller would work just fine!! And if you use colored clay you can get some
really neat effects!!! Polymer clay users borrow ideas and tools from a lot
of other disciplines, no reason you can't borrow back!! ;o)
