For me the pugmill is the most important part of the pottery after the wheel
and the kiln. I wouldn't be without it.
I do not knead the clay, except to cone it up and down three times before
opening, because the pugmill has de-aired it.

Of course, if you are young and have strong hands and don't worry about
straining the thumb joints over a period of time, then forget about buying a
pug mill and knead away ....
