Has anyone out there heard of the Red Wing Pottery which was active in the
"40s and '50s and maybe later? I would like to know who ran it if possible.

Debby,
Red Wing Pottery is alive and kicking.
http://www.redwingpottery.com
Ask for Scott. Scott and the other gentleman who's name escapes me are very
productive in the pottery and making a lot of work. The nameless gentleman
last time I talked with him was in the 280,000 range of pieces of pottery he
has thrown through the years. NOW that's a lot of pots!
Thank you.

We have good friends that collect Red Wing pottery. They
actually make an annual trip to Red Wing, Minnesota for some
collectors' club gathering. These friends probably have
tons of literature and what not about the pottery. Let me
know if you have specific questions and I'll get in touch
with them.

Deb,
As noted Red Wing is alive and active today. John Falconer was the guy who
revived it in the late 80's? Not sure if he's still running it today but when
we last spoke, in the early 90's, he was in charge.
John used to be a potter on the craft fair circuit in the early 80's and then
somehow got connected with Red Wing and the rest, as they say, is history. I
only met him a few times, when I too was on the circuit, but when I called
him in the early 90's to promote my mold making biz we spoke as if we'd known
each other for years. (we did, sorta)
Really great guy, really great potter.
Jeff Longtin
ps. The story of John and Red Wing is really interesting. Here he was, a
potter on the scene, in the 70's and 80's, doing his own work, doing his own
thing, and then he was in a position, either he was asked, or he saw an
oppurtunity, to revive Red Wing and he chose to do it. In other words, he put
aside his own work to revive a very old, very established, pottery tradition.
Oddly, while he and I are on completely opposite ends of the ceramic
spectrum, I'm trying to start a new tradition, he's reviving one, we both
really, really respect craft and craft traditions and so found mutual ground
upon which to talk.
...It's funny, as I write this I realise how much I miss being part of the
the clay scene around here and how great some potters are! I really need to
get back into it I must say!
(Now remember, I didn't say all potters, afterall, some of you are real
bastards.) :-)
take care gang
