ron and jon's majolica

Dear Ron and Jon,

I have been testing majolica glazes for fit to my claybody for some time
now without finding one that I am wild enough about to commit to. I am
assuming that R & J's majolica is cone six and would like to know if it
could be modified for 04.

Thanks for any input,

Hi Joanna,

Yes, it is for cone 6 and modifying it for cone 04 would take some
experimentation and probably several attempts--it would definitely be a
different glaze when it was all done. At cone 06-04 it is always a
challenge getting glazes and bodies to work well together. The window
within which you can work is so much smaller. Your choice of attractive,
stable glazes (you can make attractive, unstable ones by going the
partially melted route) is miniscule and pretty much limited to glossy
glazes. I think that is one of the major reasons a lot of potters
eventually move up to cone 5 or above.

John

Hi Joanna,

I think John answered this the right way - it would be difficult to make
our cone 6 majolica into a 04 glaze - it would be completely different and
even more importantly - it would be very difficult to make it a durable
glaze.

My advice is always the same on this subject - go to cone 6 where you can
work with vitrified clay and have a much better chance at making durable
glazes.

The only argument against it is the clay colour at cone 6 - it is difficult
to get that earthenware red at cone 6 - most potters I know just use a
white body which eliminates the slip problems. You can get the bright
overglaze colours though.
