woodfiring

Greetings to All,

We're getting prepared for the sixth firing of the big woodkiln. What a
lot of work! About 80 boards of pots so far and I figure to throw a
couple of more days, then start glazing. Giving myself 14 days to glaze
instead of the 10 I got last time. Also, in these last few days of
throwing I've been trying to make BIGger pots, in order to fill all the
space. Using the method of throwing a tall cylinder, then drying with a
fan as the wheel turns, before finishing. Am I cheating?

The woodpile is looking good, it's all stacked and beautiful, but not as
beautiful as it will be when it burns. This time it's about half
industrial scrap (free for the hauling from a truss factory [Doug Fir],
and a moulding outfit [eastern hardwood, mostly Oak]) and half Ponderosa
Pine cordwood, gotten the hardway with pickup and chainsaw. Last year
the moulding place hauled 70 some thousand pounds to the landfill.
Criminally awful, ain't it?

It's stunning how this change from gas to wood has changed everything
else in my potter life. Think of a six month cycle between firings
instead of one month. A bunch of wierd-O potters hanging around . A
lighter claybody a must. The glazes are all different. YOW! Gotta get my
testing regime organised.

If it's appropriate I'll post a few progress reports on this firing.
Anyone interested?

This group has helped me a lot, gotten me new friends and made me feel
connected to the larger world of potters and clay artists of all kinds.
A heartfelt thanks to you all! And especially to Mel and Joyce.

Best wishes,

Paul,

I can't speak for anyone else, but I, for one, would love to see the
progress reports. If it doesn't seem appropriate to you here on the list,
please keep me up-to-date off-list. I'm still very much looking forward to
my first wood firing, but it probably won't be until after we've relocated.

I, too, would love to see progress reports. It's impossible to imagine
semi-annual firings! Do you load the kiln as you finish work, adding new
things in til it's filled, or do you do one immense loading? You must
forget half of what you've made by the time a firing is due. Pictures would
be fun, too.

Two ancient electric kilns. One Paragon 18" x 20".
One in-process Crusader 24"X 27". Both outside.
It never rains here at the Mexican border.
One partner, one kid, three cats.

Hi Catherine,

OK, I got three people to say yes, so I'll report in on the firing,
irregularly.

We will load for four days, fire for three, and cool for four. It IS
hard to remember what the heck I did. I'm going to take notes and do
drawings as I glaze.

Sorry, no pictures yet. The gallery I sell through in Reno has a
website, and I'll (eventually) try to get some pictures up there.

Toiling away,

Jan,

It's an anagama, interior measurements 15' long, floor 5' wide, arch
4.5' at the highest point. The floor steps up 3 times. Then there's a
salt chamber above that, a catenary arch of about 50 cu ft. Kind of a
strange Asian/Teutonic hybrid.
