advertising & life in los angeles

Dear Claybuds;

I have read the thread about advertising with interest, as I have been selling
my tools from my website for some months now. I have often felt anxious for
mentioning them on Clayart, not wanting to present my products as exclusive,
or 'the best'. Same for the website. I DO go to some lengths to share what I
do as freely as I can imagine, the tutorials being the latest manifestation of
this view. Anyway, I hope I will not be perceived by my fellow claybuds
as 'after the $$', at least exclusively. I DO appreciate the forum that
Clayart provides.

Meanwhile, I sit here in front of my brother's new fancy laptop in my old
bedroom high above Westwood Village (Los Angeles), remembering the exciting
evenings during blackouts (WWll), watching the play of searchlights looking
for Japanese planes in the sky above the coast. Since my father died, my three
brothers and I have been trying to get the place ready to list with the
realtors, and I have just finished a four-day battle with the bamboo groves
with scars to testify to an uneven contest. Each day, I walk at 6:30am for an
hour around the streets of my old neighborhood, finding and remembering the
homes of old classmates and girlfriends, musing on the subject of 'how did I
get from watching for enemy planes to potting in a Japanese mode?'

I had lived here since I was born in '39 until leaving in '58 to go to the U
of Oregon, and junk has been building up here for 63 years. I AM resolving to
bring some zen-simplicity into my home and studio in Eugene! No doubt my wife
will approve, while doubting my resolve. I did a mini-workshop for Brad Miller
and Mollie Favour's class in the Venice Arts program..............wonderful
folks and lots of fun. I wish that for all those on Clayart.

Cheers, Hank.....awaiting Ian's arrival next week.
