The new Andy Warhol 37 cent stamp page includes an
"artist statement", which in typical Warhol fashion, is
really an anti-artist statement:

"If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the
surface: of my paintings and films and me, and there I am.
There's nothing behind it."

It's a pretty cool looking stamp. $7.40 for a sheet of 20.

I met Andy Warhol in Greenwich Village, NY, NY in 1975 or so...

I had just been to a most amazing exhibition of Islamic Art and was
bristling with sketch book and images. Anway, on the way home, I walked
into a bookshop, where this wierd little man was sitting in front of a huge
stack of books, looking rather bemused. Sickly looking with red rimmed
rabbit eyes. Rather unsavoury and creepy. Like he never saw the light of
day.

No one was taking any notice of him, so I thought he was a book seller...
Anyway, after looking at one of the books on the table infront of him, I
asked "Who is this Andy Warhol?" He blinked hard and said, "Oh, just a
local artist". I asked if he was any good? "Well, depends what you are
looking for".

After saying it looked like he had he job cut out selling all those books
and feeling a little sorry for him, I enthusiastically launched into my
recent experience and exposure to the Islamic Art of several centuries...
Showed him my sketches, especially a parrot head on a walking cane...
Prattled on in my usual manner... He kept looking at me balefully and it
was like there really was nothing inside him. Like talking to a TV screen.

He finally asked if I wanted to buy one of his books afterall. I said not
really, thank you, especially as I had never heard of this Warhol fellow
and I was on a shoestring budget seeing we could only take =A350 in foreign
currency out of the UK at that time. ...He took my sketch book and signed
it... I was a little annoyed having a shop assistant "autograph" unasked
and decided it was his way of getting rid of me.

Only later I realised who he was...

And if he said there was nothing behind it, I am quite sure he was telling
the truth. It was certainly the impression he made.
