Hello all,
I have a fortune to go to
China-Mashiko-Tokyo-Seto(maybe)-Kyoto-Hagi-Karatsu(may be) this Novenmer(4
weeks). 10 days in China(Beijing, Yantsu-River Gorges, the Great walls,
Shanghai) and the rest in Japan.
I have no particular plans yet. Does any one have suggestions for me to do
in China and even in Japan.
Any sugeestion would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Aiko, so much to see in so little time. I would definitely recommend the
Shanghai Museum. One of the finest museums in the world. You can spend a
whole day there. Instead of taking photos, purchase books of the museum's
collection's in the museum store. Another good place to look at every kind
of ceramic ware produced in China is the Jingdezhen Ceramics Shanghai Art
Center. (1253 Da Du He Lu between Jin Sha Jiang Lu and Mei Chuan Lu)
Spacious building with working studios and huge displays of ceramics.
Remember you will be carrying everything you purchase the rest of the trip!
If you get out into the country side outside of Shanghai, Zhou Zhuan, Ming
Dynasty canal village. Interesting place to wander in and out of the shops.
Reminds me of a Chinese Riverwalk.
A Great Wall visit can be crowded in Beijing. If you have the time, one of
the most fantastic places to see the Great Wall is north of Beijing 120
miles, At Simatai there is a cable car to take you part of the way to the
top. Breathtaking scenery! It is the also the most dangerous because of the
walls run atop the mountains with steep drop offs on either side. I know you
probably will already have the Forbidden City, or the Palace Museum, which
it is called today on your schedule.
Have fun!

I haven't been to Japan, but (also!) had the great fortune to go to China
last year. I loved the ceramics section in the beautiful new Shanghai
Museum. I didn't see any of the other sections and almost missed the
departure of the tour bus--captured by Celadons, I was!

If you are interested in such things. Kyoto hosts one of the major bonsai
exhibitions in Japan ( Grand View Bonsai Exhibition "Taikan-Ten") during
the November week 11/21-25. in Miyakomesse. Kyoto. Open 9-4. 800 yen
admission. About 300 trees. A great place to get pottery is in the vending
area.. Primier trees and antique pots, huge vending area.

Aiko - I visited Bejing for two weeks in July. The National Museum of History, located on the side of Tiananmen Square, had a wonderful exhibit on Ancient Chinese Art with lots of pottery. It was wonderful!! I don't know if it was a temporary or permanent exhibit. And of course don't miss the Great Wall. Have a great time!!!
