Like many overseas readers, my Ceramic Monthly arrives around six weeks
after everyone has referred to and discussed items in the previous month's
issue. There had been some mention of rare earth glazes, but even so, when
I opened the September 2002 issue which arrived this morning I was totally
unprepared for the shock.
I heartily wish that some kind and public-spirited Clay Buddy had prepared
us weaker souls for what to expect. Dear me... I needed smelling salts. (We
Victorian ancients still use them)...
Now I know that someone will love "Lime Jell-O Day-Glo", "Pink Lemonade
Day-Glo" and "Apparently Lavender Celadon-Type Glaze" but to be faced with
them first thing in the morning was a tad too much to bare.
Quickly turning over the page to distract my pained brain, what then
assaulted my poor eyes where the yellow, green and PINK equivalents to
Mother-in-Law Blue...
If I did not share my CMs with visiting artists and makers, I would glue
the pages together. As it is, I am reluctant to ever open another
uncensored clay magazine again... So would some kind Clayarters please take
it upon themselves to warn us about any such innovations in the future? It
helps to be mentally prepared before meeting ghoulies and ghosties and long
legged beasties and things that go bump in the night...
Sincerely - with the help of Robbie Burns
