There was an interesting article about a Roman Mosaic that's 1,700 years old found in southern England http://www.archaeology.org/magazine.php?page=0211/newsbriefs/mosaic it's interesting because they point out that the way the ceramic tile roof fell over the mosaic is what preserved it so well. There's also a nice picture of the mosaic at the site..
