Cheryl, try putting the tank in a large pan of water and/or
occassionally run water from the hose over the tank. This should solve the
immediate problem.
The next thing to be certain of is the amount of LPG that you have in
your tank to begin with. THe fuller the tank the less likelyhood that you
will freeze up during the firing. If the problem persists with even a full
tank then you would be advised to get another tank of equal or larger
(preferable) size and manifold them together. The idea being not to drop the
pressure in the tank to quickly which is the cause of the freeze up.
Before going through the hassle of a manifold type set up try using the
next size up. If there isn't a problem with your burner that should solve
the problem. I've never had a propane tank, even the smaller ones, freeze up
on me if the burners were working right and there was enough fuel in the
tank.
How many and what type of burners are you using? What is the size of
your tank(s)?

Cher - Put the tank in a larger container and add water to cover
bottom quarter or third of tank.

I didn't see any other answers yet, and others will probably have a more
elegant way of explaining, but the drop in pressure as you use gas causes the
chillingand further drops the pressure. Sitting the tank in a tub of hot
water works wonderfully to restore the pressure. The good news is that you
can refire with good results.
If you don't have it, get Steve Branfmans book on raku. It has kept me from
disaster several times. He's on the list, so thank you, Steve!

Hey all,
I'm doing my first raku firing as we speak. Can't seem to access the
archives and I have an immediate problem...tank froze up. I know this is not
good, and I seem to remember a thread about whether to put the tank in a
bucket of water or not.
What to do????? I turned off the gas until I can get some advice on
this. Hope someone can tell me what I need to do.

Dear Cheryl

There are valves that allow you to connect two bottles of gas to a kiln
that you set to take off the cylinder that is most empty. Then it transfers
to the other bottles when the pressure drops . With this 'gizmo' you can
fire with out problems and the gas is not wasted in the emptying cylinder .
ask the company that supply the gas (name should be on the bottle) or a gas
fitter. I remember the transfer is automatic but I had to do the switch
manually to decide which bottle the gas came from first.

Most of us have gas cookers so our (mayo potters) Raku kiln is fired
with one bottle. we seem to get a days firing out of the one bottle before
any trouble. You either have a big kiln or you may be wasting some gas.
