Indeed, a craftsperson I met at a local show had a great set up with 2
marine batteries on a dolly. The booth looked wonderful. He made furniture
and lamps and the light allowed him to make the whole booth look like a
living room, complete with rug. Really great!

Sarah,
I've not tried exactly what you're talking about here, but I can tell you
that car batteries would be a poor choice for this type of use. Car
batteries don't react well to being charged up and then drained all - or
nearly all of the way, and then recharged again. You need a marine (boat)
type battery that says it's "deep cycle". These types are designed for
handling the big-charge/big-drain cycle that you need. They come in all
sizes and are rated in terms of "amp-hours". You'll need to figure out how
long you want to run your 300 or 400 watts to do a show.
300 Watts at 12 volts is 25 amps. 400 Watts at 12 volts is 33.3 amps. So
just multiply the number of amps times the number of hours and you'll see
how much battery life you'll need. For example, if you want to run 25 amps
for 4 hours, you'll need AT LEAST a 100 amp-hour rated battery (preferably
more to be safe). If the draw is pretty large, you may need to use more
than one battery. You can either connect them together in parallel, or
just swap them out when you drain each one - doesn't matter which way you
do it. Hope this is helpful.

I am looking for a battery system to take to shows where electricity is not
avaliable. I have a DC/AC converter, but I'm not sure what size and type of
battery to get. I have lights which now use 300 watts of power. I would like
to up that to 400. We had hoped to have a battery that could be charged in
the car on the way home, but car type batteries seem like their capacity is
too small. What are others using?

Also, if I remember correctly from previous discussions on this thread, there
are deep cycle batteries available that are gel filled, making them safer to
use and handle.
