I have a new extruder and I'm having problems with it....
alot of times the tubes will get splits as they dry, same
thing if I cut tubes into slabs, I will get splits the
down the long length... what am I doing wrong? I am guessing
that maybe the little metal holder gizmo for the center is
causing them? am I using to dry/wet of clay? I am spraying
the inside of the extruder tube with WD-40 before I load the
clay, could this be part of the problem?
thanks for any ideas,
Connie

Connie - try just wetting the extruder with water, instead of WD40. I think
the oil in the WD40 probably gets into the"split" caused by the metal gizmo
for holding the center of the die, and the clay can't quite seal itself
together again.

Connie, I had the same problem with mine. I used a nut between the inner
die part and the metal holder. That allowed enough room for the clay to
compress back together after being seperated by the metal piece.

The "metal 'Gizmo'" is known as a Torpedo in the industrial part of pottery.
May I suggest that you don't use oil based products in the extruder
{although many do}.
Water is the best lubricant in the machine.
Failing that use a moister clay.

CROC.
