I was going to shut up, as my build-your-own views irritate so many, But
hiding behind Mel, let me say:
Strong spinning things abound. A swivel type office chair found in the
street, endless bearings in lovely housings found at junkyards. AND
wonderful powerful bearings bought from woodworking shops. All can be
adapted for less cost than a commercial banding wheel.
Pottery equipment was CHEAP when most potters still were making their own.
Today manufacturers compete with each other, not with do-it-yourself
potters. i realize that with today's litigious climate schools and many
private teachers dare not let students use home-made stuff. But in the
privacy of one's own studio....
