I have an old Bluebird I dearly love. She too rusts inside the barrel, as
I bought her new the auger has never been a problem.
I was told at the time by someone, not the maker that I should leave the
clay ON when I need to store her a while--as I needed to when I went away in
winter. This is supposed to keep the rusting down.
Nevertheless, I use a steel brush on her barrel, dry, and flush a lot,
before reassembly. The augers in my case present no problem, do not need
brushing, but that is what I would try.
I ALSO HAVE A BUCKET OF CLAY USED ONLY TO CLEAN THE BLUEBIRD. I run that
clay through a couple of times when starting out, and it picks up most of
the remaining flakes. I need to add a few pounds each year so that the last
run is "clean" and then make a few "nevermind" pots to see how clean the
stuff is.
That cleanup clay is not wasted. I use it as base for forms i will cast in
plaster, and then goes into the PLASTER CLAY supply.
