Hey, and that's the point; we ceramists are dedicated but , oh so
casual group. We meet in many venues like NCECA but look so
different from the usuall conference folks they are used to.
It usually takes a day or so for the conference hotel staff to get used
to us blue jeans and shorts folks and realize we are "just folks". And
freindly folks indeed. The staff at these conference hotel sites are
underpaid working sitffs like us. They are used to dealing with
conventionairs in suits who treat the staff rather like lackeys. It
takes a few days for the staff to find we are just "common" folks who
treat everyone with decency and respect. Then they loosen up and flow
with the NCECA group.
I often talk with the staff at these conference hotel sites during and
after the conference. I want to know how they feel about us. They are
always surprised at how friendly and considerate we are compared to the
other conference groups they must cater to.
Keep that in mind when you first come to the conference hotel/ site.
These staff are not attuned to us. They do respond very positively to
being treated with respect and open friendship.

When I was at NCECA last year in Kansas City, I found myself in the
elevator with a couple of staff members. They peered at my name tag and
asked me what group it represented. I told them that we were a national
"ceramic artists and ceramic education" organization.
One of the guys reflected, then said, "Huh...well I must say that's a lot
more interesting then the refrigeration, needlepoint, or aluminum siding
groups that we had last week." !!
