Dear Woodheads,
I've been invited to participate in my first wood firing and I'm stoked
(could this be the origin of this colloquial slang??)
My question is: are most pots fired in wood kilns once fired? I've read
numerous articles over the years in CM, and it seems like the majority
of ware going in is glazed or raw greenware. Does it matter, are the
affects/losses different? I've got a lot of large bisqued pots that are
begging to be included in this firing.
Checked the archives, but found no specific info on this.
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
Most of the pots that go into our woodkiln are bisque fired, for the
reason that the potters have to bring them to the kiln. and greenware
doesn't travel well. I fire some greenware because my studio is right
next to the kiln.
I've found that the "normal" toasty-looking ^10 reduction stoneware
bodies come out quite dark in woodfiring. Try porcelain or white
stoneware, it shows the effects better, IMHO.
In Long Valley, where the leaves are falling, and this woodhead is still
trying to recover from the last firing.
Good luck on your first one.
