itc and older soft brick kilns /converting to down draft

Ok, I know that I could search the archives and all. But please cut me
some slack and help with this ITC stuff.

We have several older soft brick up draft kilns here at Nottingham that
we are fixing up. I would like to patch them up and spray with ITC 100
for greater efficiency. Is that ok, and if so, any tips on the
process. I don't see why we can't spray the soft brick with ITC but
want some advise and reassurance.

On another tack; we are thinking of converting an Olson 20 cu. ft.
updraft to a downdraft kiln. We are thinking of cutting a draft flu in
the bottom back and adding a new chimney. I'd really like some imput on
that. Like, are we nuts, or how to do it, what chimney stuff to use etc.

Any and all help and advice is appriciated. Nils, Mel, Delkic, whoever
knows what to do on this.

Hi Terry,
Actually I can address both your questions. I sprayed my very hard working
Olsen kiln [soft brick] with ITC maybe four years ago. Just once. I
haven't needed to do it again.
I do use ITC 200 Easy all the time, patching up cracks almost every
firing. I fire in reduction, and am now playing with Shino.
I get incredably great color. I am curious as to why you want to change the
way it fires. I really think you should use ITC, and try a firing to see
what happens. ITC cuts down the firing time, so don't let it run away too
fast. Two days ago I got to cone 11 in 10 hours in very heavy reduction,
with me slowing it down at from cone 7 on. My color was great. Shino and
celedon. Great reds too. [You can look at my display on
www.berkeleypotters.com] This kiln is very well designed. Good luck, Rikki
in Berkeley
