4 days in san francisco

updated thu 14 nov 02

Hubby made an offer I couldn't refuse.
So, in spite of all the shows I have lined up in a few weeks ( 3 of them in
1 weekend) and all the work I must yet produce I'm going to San Francisco
for 4 days next week.
Clayarter Bonita Cohen and I will get together. We will be at the Carlton &
are not renting a car.
Any suggestions for galleries, exhibits, other clayarters etc?

Gayle,

The most knowledgeable clay person (I am convinced) in the SF Bay area is
Barbara Brown at bbrown3@webtv. She is a wonderful person who has
connections everywhere, especially in the Bay Area.

Gayle -

I took advantage of an offer like yours in '98 and had
the time of my life. I really did "leave my heart in
San Francisco." No car was no problem. I greatly
enjoyed the SF Museum of Art and visiting with Dorothy
Weiss, now deceased I THINK. I found some very
interesting but expensive Scandanavian ceramics from
the 1950's (?) in an art/home decor shop. (Sorry, I am
not where my travel notes are.)

We went to Berkeley just because it's so famous, hated
it and quickly left - but not before visiting Sandy
Simon's TRAX - with Robt Brady, her home & studio from
which she also sells excellent ceramics by selected
artists. Open only certain days I think. She was
very gracious. Mary Law is in the same neighborhood I
think.

BUT....my REAL advice is to just ENJOY San Francisco -
ride the cable cars incl. to the top of the incredible
hill on Embarcadero St. (?) - stand on the back deck
and hang out the side. Grab a guide book and walk
around. If possible, take a tour boat under the
Golden Gate Bridge preferrably at night - get out on
the top deck. Incredible. We enjoyed Grand Cafe in
Hotel Monaco and one day I had fantastic sushi alone
at Kyoya. We also found a neighborhood Italian place
almost opposite City Lights which is a great book
store and a real reminder of times past. Morrows Nut
Shop near Union (?) Sq sells fantastic cinnamon coated
almonds.

If you like painting, MOMA has Gerhart Richter, a retrospective, huge,
excellent show I have seen in New York a few months ago, and am going to see
again tomorrow. Very well worth seeing. As to clay, I am not aware of
anything special, but I am no expert on S.F.shows. Rikki in Berkeley

I second the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I grew up in San
Francisco and remember the old space near the Opera building. The new
building
blew me away. It is a real museum; in Seattle we get a staircase with
small galleries attached in SF they get a fabulous building and lots of
galleries they can
have four or five shows at once, in Seattle we can climb the
stairs........

I like the Buena Vista Cafe at the end of the cable car line at Aquatic
Park. great place for breakfast with an Irish Coffee, the Buena Vista
is the place that
introduced Irish Coffee to the US. It is a place for Locals and
tourists alike. Nothing like an Irish Coffee at 9 or 10 am to start
the day off right.

Also Lefty O'Doul's near Union Square the last of the piano bars
downtown. Lots of Baseball memorabilia including pictures of DiMaggio
and Ruth
(DiMaggio was from SF bay Area) and Norma Jean DiMaggio’s USO ID card is
blown up to about 6 x 8 feet.

While in Japan town go to Soko Hardware for Japanese tools and dry
goods, interesting carpenter and gardening tools as well as Japanese
Tansu hardware.

A drink at the Cliff house is a nice thing to do esp. in a storm.

The area near 24th and Mission will seem like another country there are
a couple of interesting gift and craft shops for goods from Latin
America. China
town is also interesting. We used to spend a lot of time there when my
friend would order in Chinese food that was not on the English menu.

Hope you have a great time,

Now, I can really endorse Karen's advice, because she gave me tips for
New York when we went to the Shino show last year. She even came along
to dinner at the restaurant she had recommended after the
opening........and was GREAT company. My advice is to take her along!

Cheers, Hank..still in LA

BTW, yesterday after two days of steady rain it broke crystal
clear.......mountains to the east, and sea and Catalina to the west.
Once again, I discovered why my parents built here. Too bad so many
others with cars decided to follow suit. Now it just about takes a
hurricane to clear the air.
