firing fire ants and gasoline

As a young teenager in Louisiana I encountered fire ants a lot. In my
own family's yard we would sometimes have a dozen good size hills.
Occasionally I would get on a vendetta and pour as much as a gallon of
gasoline into the nest. I'd stand back and throw a burning rag...there
was a nice little thump, not too big. I guess there wasn't enough air
down in those passages to give a good explosion. Once I didn't set fire
to it at all...this was the most effective assault...that nest died
completely.

I have read that even a little gasoline on the ground can get into the ground
water. Maybe you should use something else on the fire ants.
